Trying & Failing to Produce Freak It by Kim Petras
Producing Songs I’ve Never Heard: Freak It by Kim Petras [EPISODE 20]
This week I took on Kim Petras’ latest single Freak It. I’m always excited for a new release from Kim, so I was ready to dive into this one ASAP.
I was expecting high-intensity, electronic, dance pop, but what I wasn’t ready for was weird timing, and that’s exactly what I got. No, this one wasn’t as extreme as the Lorde situation earlier this year, but it wasn’t exactly the most straightforward track either.
If you’re interested in hearing the acapella I worked with, you can check that out here:
While this episode definitely gave me a challenge, it also gave me the opportunity to see a lot of growth in myself as a producer, in terms of how I was able to work through that kind of obstacle. During my earlier episode featuring Lorde’s track, What Was That, I was just about ready to give up, but 20 episodes in and now I’m taking on those moments in stride.
I think this series has really helped me not hold on too tightly to any particular elements of a track or any lofty expectations. I’ve found I’m so much quicker now at making decisions and powering through, not getting too hung up on any one thing. I’m much happier with just getting something down rather than worrying about whether or not it’s going to be a masterpiece. I think this episode was definitely a testament to that.
Is the final track perfect? No, definitely not. But, I think there are at least some elements in there that I could eventually repurpose for something else. And regardless, what a cool new Kim song! This track felt like a bit of a different direction for her, maybe due to the fact that she’s finally working with some new producers? It felt dirtier (production-wise), less polished, but still hard-hitting and edgy. I’m really looking forward to hearing whatever else she has on this upcoming album.
What did you think of her latest single?
In other news, I’ve finally decided to cancel my Spotify premium membership. It’s been so long since I actually felt like their discovery features were showing me anything interesting, and idk about you, but why am I paying and still getting ads for podcasts? What am I paying for here?
So, with that said, I’m switching over to YouTube Premium for now to see how that goes. So far, even just for the podcast situation, I’m already liking it way more. What streaming services do you like to use? Has anyone else branched out from Spotify recently?
